[Print]Home » Girls' Basketball NewsLadies Launch Raider Attack on Warriors!November 18, 2009 By Redd Rider of Good Hope High School
On a strong defensive effort the Good Hope Lady Raiders defeated the West Point Lady Warriors 55 - 39 in the first home game of the season. This takes the girls to 1 -1 and they will host Fairview this Friday. Good Hope High School D. E. Ryan Gymnasium Tuesday, November 17, 2009 GOOD HOPE 57 WEST POINT 39 Good Hope was led by Elizabeth Hardin with 24 points. Kami Calvert had 10 points, Kayla Tillman had 7, Darcie Wilson had 6, Ashley Stanley and Sheila Shamblin added 2 each. Nina Mills continues to be a strong point guard directing Good Hope to the victory before fouling out of the contest. Ashley Stanley takes over the point duties when Mills is out. This is a young squad with a load of talent. Three Freshmen contributed greatly tonight: Kami Calvert is a strong post presence on both ends of the court, Kayla Tillman is all over the court on defense and is a force to be reckoned with on offense as well, Darcie Wilson adds depth to a talented bunch and a long range shot to boot. Hardin and Stanley compiment the team well with strong play both ways! We are very impressed with this squad. They should have a great season! Johnny Thornton's take on the game from CullmansSportsPage.com: LADY RAIDERS BREAK INTO THE WIN COLUMN: At D.E. Ryan Gymnasium - Good Hope West Point 11 9 6 13 - 39 Good Hope 7 21 20 9 - 57 HALFTIME; Good Hope 28-20 GOOD HOPE (1-1): Elizabeth Hardin 23, Kami Calvert 8, Darcie Wilson 9, Kayla Tillman 7, Ashley Stanley 2, Nina Mills 4, Shelia Shamblin 4. WEST POINT (0-2): Sarah Perry 14, Rachel Persall 6, Kari Williams 6, Susan Harbison 6, Kaleigh Nuss 2, Kaitlin Chappell 1, Erica Laidley 4. A very productive second and third period in which the Lady Raiders outscored the Lady Warriors 41-15, carried them from a first period deficit into victory in the home opener. One reason for Good Hope's success was the ability to score from long distance with 10 field goals from three-point range, eight coming during the second and third quarter as Hardin had four in that span with Wilson getting three and Tillman one. Wilson and Tillman just happen to be freshmen players for Michael Oldacre and added to the quality he received from Hardin who rotated the point guard position with Nina Mills in which she had nine field goals for a great performance in her first game in front of the home crowd. Good Hope led 48-36 going into the final period with West Point able to reduce the deficit to 18 but the Lady Warriors not able to stay even with the deadly outside game of the Lady Raiders prevented Regina Jones' unit from spoiling the fun with members of the 2004 county championship Raiders and Lady Raiders watching. The two teams were recognized prior to the start of the varsity boys game, an event that was added to the flare of it being the Good Hope home opener and facing a Cullman County opponent.RAIDERS PERFORM WELL IN WINNING HOME OPENER: At D.E. Ryan Gymnasium - Good Hope West Point 20 12 11 13 - 56 Good Hope 10 21 20 19 - 70 HALFTIME: West Point 32-31 GOOD HOPE (2-0): Kyle Aycock 23, Cameron Aycock 14, Scott Motes 14, Garrett Roberts 8, Taylor Hollis 7, Josh McClure 3, Trevor McReath 1. WEST POINT (0-3): Mason Beck 19, Zach Douglas 12, Zach Baswell 8, Ethan Tilley 4, Tristan Hulsey 2, Brandon Jacobson 3, Kevin Aaron 8. With only 10 points on the scoreboard after the first 8:00, the Raiders went out to change that pattern and also changed their defensive setup when West Point moved out to a 26-10 lead early in the second period. The Raiders went to a pressure defense, getting out of the zone and that gave them inspiration to go on a 15-0 run and get back in the game before the half ended. West Point was able to lead at the break when point guard Tristan Hulsey, the son of Good Hope coach David Hulsey, hit a reverse layup and Heith Yearwood's team played their best half of the young season in leading at the break. But Good Hope came out on fire. The Raiders moved in front and stayed on top for the rest of the way. A 12-4 spurt gave them A 43-36 lead which grew to 51-43 by the end of the third period. Kyle Aycock sparked Hulsey's Raiders in the second half with 15 points, scoring five field goals and going four of four from the line. Motes delivered four second half baskets and a trey by Cameron Aycock in the third period enabled the Raiders to have three starters combine for 51 of the 70 points. Mason Beck was hot in coming off the bench to lead the West Point attack, but the Warriors managed just six points in the final five plus minutes of the opening half after they sprinted to a 16-point lead, ending the first quarter on a 15-0 run with four players scoring two field goals apiece in the opening 8:00/. The Warriors were unable to cool off the Raiders after Good Hope took an eight-point spread into the final quarter with the Raiders shooting nine of 13 from the line in the final stanza for a respectable 69 percent as Kyle Aycock was four of four and Josh McClure three for three.
