MUD BATH!!!!
October 10, 2009 By Redd Rider of Good Hope High School
The weather Gods brought plenty of moisture and a lot of wind to Ray Talley Stadium in Hanceville, AL tonight! After changing the game to a 5 pm start time, a tornado siren delayed the game just after the National Anthem. Again, after Good Hope took the opening kickoff and marched down to the Bulldog 5 yard line with 5:44 left on the 1st quarter clock, Mother Nature hit again and this time some very serious wind, rain and lightning made one wonder if the game was going to happen or not.
The storm blew over and the game did resume. In the end Hanceville came out on top 36-20 after a seesaw type game until the end.
Good Hope gave their all but did not have a solid answer to stop the running attack of the Bulldogs. Jubian Simmons and Sheldon Lewis teamed up to give the Raiders fits on the ground. Brocton Malcom steered Hanceville up and down the field.
Josh McClure took most of the snaps under center while Taylor Hollis took a few from the shotgun in certain passing situations. Jacob Mann and Hollis did most of the running for Good Hope.
Good Hope had 255 yards rushing, 26 passing for 281 total offense. Taylor Hollis had 27 carriers for 171 yards and 2 touchdowns. Scott Motes had 2 carries for 46 yards and the Raiders only other touchdown. Jacob Mann had 8 carries for 35 yards. Nicholas Harbison had 1 catch for 13 yards.
Good Hope had 12 first downs.
Good Hope will host Winfield next Friday night at James W. Shabel Stadium.

Michael Cummings Cullman Times article:
PREP FOOTBALL: Lewis' big night paces BulldogsBy Michael A. Cummings HANCEVILLE - For Sheldon Lewis, a football game just isn't a football game without a healthy dose of mud, muck and grime. And wouldn't you know it - the Hanceville High fullback got one last chance to enjoy all three in the closing seconds Friday night against Good Hope. When he did, Lewis put the exclamation point on the Bulldogs' biggest win to date this season. Leading by eight late in the fourth quarter and needing only a first down to run out the clock, Lewis broke free for a 53-yard touchdown run - his fourth of the night - to seal the Bulldogs' 36-20 win over Good Hope at a rain-soaked Ray Talley Stadium. "Muddy, rainy, dirty - that's my kind of weather," said Lewis, who finished with 96 yards rushing and four touchdowns on 13 carries. "I was just running the ball. I saw an open hole and I took it." Lewis got to enjoy the muddy conditions due to an hour-plus rain delay that interrupted the game with 5:44 left in the first quarter. Despite the less-than-ideal conditions, the teams combined for 660 total yards and 56 points. Hanceville (3-4, 2-3 Class 3A, Region 7) finished with 327 rushing yards, led by sophomore Diamond Simmons' 199 yards on 32 carries. Sophomore quarterback Broc Malcom added 32 yards on eight attempts. Good Hope (1-6, 0-5) got a monster game from senior tailback Taylor Hollis, who recorded 189 yards rushing and two touchdowns on 28 carries. The game was tied at 20 until midway through the fourth quarter, when Lewis scored his third touchdown of the game. The freshman's 1-yard run and Ty Shadrix's 2-point catch gave the Bulldogs a 28-20 advantage with 5:59 left in the game. But the play almost never happened. On first-and-goal at the Good Hope 9-yard line, Simmons rushed 8 yards but fumbled near the goal line. An alert Shadrix pounced on the ball to keep the drive going. Lewis put Hanceville ahead two plays later. "Your first instinct is to just get your whole body on the ball," said Shadrix. "Some people like to try and scoop it up, but I knew our backs could get it in the end zone." On the 2-point try, wide receiver Joseph Umphrey took a handoff before finding Shadrix on a halfback option pass. Just like the scoring play, it almost never happened. "On the play before I think I broke my fingers, and coach told me I was going to pass it," said Umphrey, who added a fourth-quarter interception. "It wasn't open at first, but Ty made a good cut to the outside." Lewis opened the scoring on a 4-yard run early in the second quarter, after the teams returned from the rain delay. Good Hope tied it midway through the quarter on Scott Motes' 43-yard run. Lewis got his second touchdown late in the second to put Hanceville up 12-6, before Malcom's 2-point run gave the Bulldogs a 14-6 advantage. Good Hope answered with a 2-yard run by Hollis with 1:13 left in the half. The 2-point run failed and the Raiders trailed 14-12 at the break. After halftime, Good Hope took its only lead on Hollis' 3-yard run, but Hanceville tied it with 1:33 left in the third on a 3-yard scamper by Malcom. "We didn't play very well at times, but we did what we had to do to win the ballgame," said Hanceville coach Danny Miller. "Good Hope got after it, and we knew they would. They kept coming back at us all night." Hanceville travels to Carbon Hill next week for another Region 7 game, while Good Hope hosts Winfield. FOURTH QUARTER BELONGS TO THE BULLDOGS: Hanceville forced a Good Hope fumble the Bulldogs recovered inside the Raider 10 in the fourth quarter that sent them on their way of breaking a deadlock. Sheldon Lewis powered his way into the end zone from the one with just under 6:00 remaining. Moments later, the freshman blasted up the middle for a 51-yard score that clinched the Bulldogs' first victory against the Raiders since 2004 in which Danny Miller's team is still alive in the 3A, Region 7 with a 2-3 record and games coming up against Carbon Hill on the road next week then at home in two weeks with Winfield. Lewis' long run pushed him over the century mark in which he and his sophomore teammate Diamond Simmons accounted for 285 yards rushing. Lewis had a season high of four touchdowns and the Hanceville offense produced its second highest point total in a game this year after sending 39 on the scoreboard in week four against J.B. Pennington.
Good Hope came in banged up and losers of five straight. But Chris Moss' Raiders played hard the entire contest until mistakes in the fourth quarter proved to be the difference. Taylor Hollis laid it all on the line with an impressive night of running the ballf or 171 yards on 27 carrries. He set up the go-ahead score in the third quarter on a 22-yard run to the 2-yard line in which he finished the drive on the next play and added the two-point conversion to give the Raiders a 20-14 lead before the Bulldogs answered with a 66-yard drive that had the game even on the scoreboard with one quarter remaining. |
